“Your HUSBAND does the cooking? You don’t wash your china by hand? You eat out ALL the time? How do you get away with that?” These sentiments are expressed way too often when a woman shirks her kitchen duties. Despite what other roles she has, kitchen duties are still seen as women’s work.
Using dishes to symbolize the role of women, this triptych transforms them from passive service vessels into a dynamic & creative work of self-expression. Rather than going back into the cupboard or being hurled in frustration, they are methodically, intentionally manipulated into an expression of energetic movement toward a better end.
The broken glass represents women’s incremental steps toward the redefinition of roles in the workplace. “Shattering the glass ceiling” is still an unrealized goal.
Despite their emancipation, these used dishes still represent another of a woman’s traditional roles: home economics-stretching the dollar. How frugal it is to repurpose damaged dishes into art!
